Standing tall at its signature Baselworld spot Rolex brought exactly what the company is a master of: consistency. No ground-breaking novelties this year, instead fine tweaks in shapes and details characterise the 2019 portfolio.
Zenith issued the Defy Inventor, the first model in series production incorporating the high-frequency monolithic silicon oscillator they had presented in 2017. The El Primero 21 also received a random-patterned carbon case for Baselworld 2019.
In this series we showcase mechanical and artistic wonders that were especially designed for women and others originally for men that come alive on spirited ladies’ wrists. 2019 brought new options for women demanding artistic and technical excellence in a timepiece. I selected a few from those presented at the SIHH.
The collaboration of designer Georg Forster and L’Epée 1839 has resulted in a clock that made every visitor turn in their tracks. We table-raced with the L’Epée Time Fast D8 like a child at Baselworld.
Time Æon is an initiative aiming to save the soon extinct traditional watchmaking know-how that once shaped timepieces. At the SIHH 2019 we spoke with David Bernard, director of the Time Æon Foundation about their past and future projects.
With its liquid capillary technology HYT has built up the entire brand around the ‘Fluidity of Time’ concept. The philosophy and the constraints of the technology are together shaping the design which is one of the most original out there. François Nunez, VP Creative Director presented the 2019 novelties to us at the SIHH.
A. Lange & Söhne celebrates two important anniversaries this year and introduced novelties on the occasion, including LANGE 1 25th Anniversary.
With the Art Piece Edition Historique Greubel Forsey closes the collection that explicitly proclaimed Greubel Forsey’s view of watchmaking being a form of art and self-expression. We admired the final edition and the surprisingly small Balancier Contemporain with its large balance wheel at the SIHH 2019.
Hermès has a history of cooperating with talents across various professional fields. This time the Maison asked Californian born, Lausanne studied industrial designer Ini Archibong to create his interpretation of a Hermès women’s watch. The SIHH 2019 shed light onto the fruit of their collaboration and other novelties, such as a curious moon phase watch.
