The inaugural issue of ARTS & CULTURE Magazine celebrates 5 years of partnerships with artists and institutions worldwide led by Arts, Culture and Heritage at Chanel.
The Vol.1 is published by Chanel and the Chanel Culture Fund under the direction of Yana Peel (Arts, Culture & Heritage President) reflects the house’s commitment to creativity, heritage, and cultural innovation. Chanel partnered with Zak Group on graphic design & art direction and the issue is printed on a variety of papers by Verona Libri.
Chanel steps into the market of high-concept editorial projects of fashion houses – for example Dior or Acne Studios are also publishing magazines. That way the project is also a dedication to the physical publishing ecosystem, and underline Chanel’s status as an active patron of global culture—encapsulated in a beautifully crafted collectible.
The launch was timed with Chanel’s centenary celebrations in the United Kingdom. Rolling out the first issue in June 2025, Chanel tied its rich heritage to its long-standing connections with the UK.
The magazine features a community of visionaries including Refik Anadol, Tilda Swinton, and Cao Fei, alongside essays by cultural leaders, stories about La Pausa (Coco Chanel’s villa, built in the late 1920s on the French Riviera), works by the winners of the Chanel Next Prize and more. A commissioned photography by the American commercial photographer and artist Roe Ethridge captures items from the Patrimonies de Chanel collection, a curated selection of iconic pieces from the brand’s history. The cover is also shot by Roe Ethridge, showcasing a 1921 statue of Gabrielle Chanel by Jacques Lipchitz, styled with metal sunglasses from the Ready-to-Wear Fall-Winter 2002/03 collection.
The Chanel Culture Fund is a global initiative launched by Chanel in 2021 aiming to empower cultural innovators and promote interdisciplinary collaboration across art and society. ‘The Fund seeks to champion equality of voice and give visibility to global gamechangers at a time when the arts provide a vital source of inspiration and shifting perspectives on the way we view the world.’
The Chanel Next Prize is an international award to catalyse innovation across arts and culture. It is awarded biennially: it grants €100,000 each to ten artists across music, dance, film, visual and digital arts, along with access to mentorship and a global support network to develop transformative projects.
Chanel is also partnering with leading cultural institutions around the world (like the National Portrait Gallery in London, Centre Pompidou in Paris or Fondation Beyeler near Basel) to create new programmes that will support innovation in creative and cultural thinking.
Chanel has partnered with independent distributors around the world – the Vol. 1 is available in about 20 bookstores in Amsterdam, Bangkok, Berlin, Glasgow, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Milan, New York, Paris, Seoul, Shanghai, Sydney, Tokyo or Zurich.
