"Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without." - Confucius

In our series launched in 2013 we showcase watches designed specifically for ladies by the brands or ones which we like to see on women’s wrists. Since then the range has expanded even further, many manufactures create not only decorated feminine pieces, but also offer timepieces with mechanical movements and complications too.

Jaeger-LeCoultre has had a love affair with women: their complicated mechanical watches specifically designed for ladies are technical and aesthetic feats. I recently visited their boutique in Vienna, operated by Hübner, where in the shade of Atmos clocks, great examples of lady-seductive wrist watches awaited me.

Rendez-Vous Celestial

Have you ever been the desert during sunset? The dunes bathe in the orange rays of the Sun as far as the eye can see. Stars soon take the reign and the relaxing game of searching for the signs of the zodiac can begin. Nature demonstrates its perfection and immenseness and the scenery is shrouded in silence. This relaxation is incomparable to anything else and is best combined with some crazy 4×4 dune bashing beforehand. Experience it in the beautiful Sharqiya Sands of Oman at least once in your life!

The new edition of Rendez-Vous Celestial reminds me of this landscape. Its rich and warm colours evoke the descending Sun and the shimmering of the aventurine dial is reminiscent of the light-play of the sand crystals in the desert. The aventurine is a type of translucent quartz which has platy mineral inclusions that have a glistening effect. Most of the orange coloured stones come from Chile, Spain or Russia. There is an elliptic sky chart, star-studded disc with zodiac calendar on the dial, surrounded by a guilloche crescent shape for the numerals. These are set in a 37.5mm rose gold case. A gold star travels on the inner-circumference of the timepiece, which can be set to the time of the next rendez-vous with the second crown.

Rendez-Vous Night & Day

As JLC describes the Rendez-Vous it is “a watch for living, it is a constant companion that sets the stage for daily living in a fascinatingly masterful and confident manner.” This is especially true for the new Rendez-Vous Night & Day. The very light, soft and easy-to-wear 18-carat pink gold/stainless steel bracelet and case fits perfectly on the wrist. It houses a self-winding movement, the 3.30 mm thin 898A calibre. The dial has exquisite silvered guilloché decoration and a delicate gold day/night indicator, just above 6 o’clock. If you like tiny but perfect details, you will love the crown set with an inverse diamond.

JLC for the spirited girls – Geophysic, Master Ultra Thin

Many models actually created for men look irresistible on confident ladies. The same is true of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Geophysic, which has everything but a girly story.

The scientific community from many different countries organised a project, called the International Geophysical Year from July 1, 1957, to December 31, 1958. The aim of the program was to generate scientific interchange between East and West political blocs. Jaeger-LeCoultre decided to take part in this unique initiative by creating an exceptional precision instrument: the Geophysic® watch. “Its calibre 478BWSbr is derived from military watches and incorporates the best watchmaking technology of that time: a stop second for precise time- setting; a glucydur (a metal alloy with a low coefficient of thermal expansion) balance for stability through changes in temperature and fitted with a shock absorber; a “swan neck” index for micrometric adjustment; and the essential soft-iron inner case that protects this exceptional mechanism from the effects of magnetism.”

The limited pink gold version (300 pieces) of Geophysic has a 38.5mm diameter case, and it is 11.3mm thick, so definitely bigger than a normal ladies’ watch. It has however a classic and refined style to which the sword-shaped luminescent hands and the cross lines in the middle lend a more edgy look. The eggshell colour dial suits skin tone very nicely.

Another masculine piece to find a new home on a female wrist is the 39mm Master Ultra Thin Moon boutique edition. It has an extremely comfortable shape, in fact more comfy than many dedicated women’s timepieces. Although the case is 39mm in diameter, it is only 9.9mm thick. The pink gold metal looks really good with the “slate-grey” sunburst dial and has an interesting contrast with the deep blue moon phase indicator.
