PRESS RELEASE: 23 April, 2023
UPDATE – 22 May: A. Lange & Söhne once again honoured the winner of the ‘Trofeo BMW Group – Best of Show’ with a unique 1815 CHRONOGRAPH in white gold. At the award ceremony, Wilhelm Schmid presented the exclusive one-off piece to William Lyon, who, with his Duesenberg SJ Speedster Gurney Nutting from the year 1935, was the favourite of the jury as well as the public.
The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy is one of the most significant classic shows in the world. It was held for the first time in the heyday of aristocratic cars in 1929. (Italy offers a marvellous ambience to other great classic car events, like the Mille Miglia, organized first in 1927). The Concorso is epitomised by the beauty of the setting, at the legendary Grand Hotel Villa d’Este – which celebrated its 150th season in 2022 – and Villa Erba on the shores of Lake Como.
A. Lange & Söhne takes pride in its role as a partner of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este since 2012.
This prestigious and historically significant competition offers guests and visitors the opportunity to admire some 50 historic cars built between the 1920s and today. The 2023 edition jointly organised by BMW Group Classic and the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este includes eight classes. An exclusive panel of experts led by president Lorenzo Ramaciotti (former Chief of Design at Pininfarina) judges the cars to select the ‘Best of Show’ prize, the BMW Group Trophy. This award is reserved for an extraordinary automobile which expresses beauty, passion and uniqueness.
The Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este is the most traditional prize of the Concorso and the award is decided by a public vote at the Villa d’Este.
A. Lange & Söhne has created the 1815 CHRONOGRAPH in white gold especially for the winner of the Trophy BMW Group ‘Best of Show’. The hand-engraved Concorso coat of arms on the hinged cuvette makes the chronograph one-of-a-kind. The chronograph houses the hand-wound manufacture calibre L951.5. With the flyback function it is possible to instantaneously reset the chronograph hands to zero during an ongoing measurement by pressing a button, and to immediately start a new measurement by releasing it.
As A. Lange Söhne CEO Wilhelm Schmid will present the winning watch to the overall winner. ‘Like the works of art on wheels exhibited here, the timepiece combines classic design with masterful mechanics’, he explains. ‘It is a sign of our admiration for automotive works of art that were way ahead of their time, and their owners, who passionately take care to preserve the timeless elegance of the mechanics.’
Amici & Automobili – Wheels & Weisswürscht at Villa Erba
